INRIA
Algorithmic Audit & Regulation Expert

Benoit Rottembourg
After starting his academic career at ENSTA, he spent more than 20 years in industry, developing software solutions for Capacity Planning and Dynamic Pricing in sectors such as construction, media, hospitality, transportation, and retail. He has led data science teams at Bouygues (a major conglomerate), at the Eurodécision IT consulting firm in France, and at Maersk in Denmark. His solutions combine applied mathematics and artificial intelligence approaches, focusing on the broad family of combinatorial and sequential optimization problems under uncertainty.
In the spring of 2020, he joined Inria, France’s national research institute for digital science and technology, to create the REGALIA project—a framework for auditing and regulating algorithms used by digital platforms. REGALIA focuses on methods for detecting bias and unfair practices in pricing and recommendation algorithms, serving regulators and auditors. REGALIA aims to bring together multidisciplinary expertise (economics, data science, legal) to propose effective, pragmatic audit methods centered on consumer and business harm.
Benoît teaches pricing and the risks associated with algorithms in business and engineering schools such as ESCP Business School, IMT Nord Europe, and ENAC, and also provides training on these topics through Inria-Academy. He has been involved in founding about half a dozen deep-tech startups in energy and retail.
